Short Summary Regional framework for sustainable transport services in Rhône Alpes Region
Regional policy Voted in April 2008.

The Schéma Régional des Services de Transport (SRST) is a policy framework through which Région Rhône Alpes wants to develop transport services that provide economical and social value to its citizens, triggering a shift from individual cars to less polluting transport modes.

The regional transport framework’s ambition is to tackle global issues related to transport and durability, as transport is the main source for emission of greenhouse gases, and causes also poor air quality problems. The development of the use of individual cars must also be curbed, as well as collective transport services need to be developed. Finally, the increase in gas prices will lead to further increase in transport costs.

SRST will be based on a shared governance with institutional partners as well as widespread grassroots participation of local communities, whose expectations in terms of transport services (public transport, aerial, river, non-polluting modes) will be taken into account.

Région Rhône Alpes will also make sure that the global supply of transport services is coherent with other dimensions of urban planning and will be vigilant not to put aside the needs of less populated, more isolated territories (e.g mountaineous areas).
SRST has five orientations :
- Improve the supply of regional train services and its adequacy with citizens’ needs
- Develop intermodal coherence between regional train and other transport modes
- Foster cooperation and partnerships to improve global governance of public transport services and intermodality
- Exploit the strategic positioning of Rhône Alpes at the center of European transport flows (rail, freight, air)
- Encourage innovation in new, less polluting transport modes, improve transport services and renew corporate image of regional train transport
